How to Choose and Book Budget Hotel in Tawau (Sabah, Malaysian Borneo)
You’ll be surprised to find that Tawau has many good hotels. There are at least 30 hotels in downtown area to choose from ranging from budget to high end hotels. The rates quote below are correct as of posting time, and of course may change at the discretion of the hotels.
Budget Hotels
1. Soon Yee Hotel

Tawau has a large selection of budget hotels. Soon Yee is a favourite with backpackers since it was featured on the backpackers guide Lonely Planet. It is situated directly across the Parkwell Supermarket. The hotel offers rooms with either private or shared baths.
Private rooms are air conditioned while shared bath rooms come with ceiling fan. Soon Yee is within walking distance of several open air food stands and night markets. There’s no online reservation available, so it’s best to call or write in advance of your stay.

2. Hotel Tawau

Hotel Tawau was built in the late 50′s along Chester Street, which is at the historical area of Tawau. It is centrally located with many old specialty shops within walking distance.
All rooms are equipped with air conditioner, bathroom, telephone and satellite television.
If you decide to stay here, take the time to explore Dunlop Street and Chester Street. The old wooden shop houses were built in the late fifties after a great fire in 1953. The Central Market, Fish Market and local bus terminal are all less than 5 minutes walk away.

3. Loong Hotel

This hotel is located near the north of the local bus terminal, and next to the Tawau’s Community Hall (Dewan). Next to the hotel is Sin Hwa Primary School, which was established before World War II.
The hotel is very well-kept and has spacious, occasionally boxy rooms. The coffee shop below has good dim sum and noodles for breakfast.
If you’re near the area, don’t forget to try the best Nasi Kuning in Tawau located at a small restaurant within the community hall. KFC and Star Cineplex are about 5 minutes walk East of this hotel.

This looks like a good cross section of hotels in Tawau. I have never been to Borneo but it looks like it would some place I would like to visit. thanks for the info.
