I love your compiled information of Tawau before 1960s...
My father David Kwong Chung CHAN took part in the later part of Indonesian Confrontation ~1966. Later he was the OCPD in Tawau (1969-1970) and captain of Field Force (1974-~1978), now called "General Operation Police".
BTW, any sequel or Part III of 50 things you never knew about... Tawau?
Please keep up the good work.
Regards,
Jack Chan

Yes, I remember the Yong Hin Building was called Sim building during the 70s and 80s. I recall the library was housed in it in those days.

One of my favourite places back then was the Royal Hotel (now North City hotel) - the coffee house on the top floor was my favourite!

Although many would regard it to be crude by today's standards, the old Tawau Airport was where I first fell in love with aeroplanes. I miss the old Fokker F27 Friendship! 1981 was a milestone. That year MAS began flying the B737 to Tawau - I still remember one of them making a number of test flights around Tawau just before that.

Hi.. I'm a Tourism & Event student, i feel very happy Tawau is finally looking for better future especially in Tourism part.
In my opinion, the very 1st thing that Tawau should do is "cleanliness"~
I think since the government is so passion in helping the locals, how about hire more people to clean-up Tawau??
And besides, i think events may also help to create awareness towards outsiders~~ ^_^

I visited the park for a day and there is certainly a lot to see - starting with the world's largest tropical rainforest tree. The paths are well marked and there are a number of covered shelters dotted around the place. Good walking shoes are required because there is a bit of mud and rock around. Leeches are inevitable - but that occurs in any rainforest.

There was an annoyance at the end of the day. I went for a final hike to the tree canopy walk - I have been on those things before and they are quite interesting. But in this case the stairway to the canopy walk was padlocked shut - meaning that I had wasted an hour of my time and picked up a few more leeches along the way for absolutely nothing. The park is well staffed, so how easy would it have been to put up a sign, or even tell people on arrival? Instead, it seems that the staff prefer to sit around sleeping rather than do some work - such as putting up a sign saying "Closed."

Hi
I like to make a short comment on the Australian travellor part 1.It was very informative and interesting.I was in Wallace bay in 1957 and I remember at one occassion,a group of our friends took a small boat and row along the shore to a small coal mine in the island itself. This was actually started by the Japanese and later abondoned.Probably the coal was not old enough.I was just wondering whether this was the area she mentioned in her article

Dear Eddy
Thank you for your comments.I was in Tawau in the fifties when the town was just doted with small chinese shops along the seaside, until it was razed with the big fire in 1953.On my return in 1954 and studying in Holy Trinity School, the row of temporary shops were withen walking distance from our school.
It was only in the sixtees when concrete building were erected at Chester and Dunlop street.I understand that your late father was Datuk Bridger and I knew him quite well. All you sisters and brothers were my friends during those time.I wanted to visit the Silimponpon coal mine, but to date was not able to.Hopefully withen this few months
